Fans of the New York cult label HOOD BY AIR are waking up to quite devastating news, as the brand yesterday announced its hiatus from the industry effective immediately. In a short press release, co-founders Shayne Oliver and Leilah Weinraub are said to be focusing on individual projects in the foreseeable future; Weinraub with her directorial debut “SHAKEDOWN,” included in the Whitney Biennial in New York City this Spring, and Oliver with his recent appointment as designer-in-residence at iconic European anti-fashion house Helmut Lang. The queer and gender-defying collective, under the direction of Oliver, has defined itself as perhaps the most exciting name in American fashion at the moment, gaining popularity from street and high fashion alike, and dressing everyone from A$AP Rocky to Rihanna. His highly anticipated shows, including a cast of queer collaborators such as Arca and photographer Wolfgang Tillmans, are known to gather large crowds of celebrities, and his difficult showpieces such as the double-facing boot have become favorites amongst fashion stylists. “HBA will continue to fulfill its creative vision in the near future,” the press release stated, signifying that this is not the end to HBA – we hope not, as we will be keeping a lookout for a resurrection in the future.
