Danish fashion history is one still being written, as testified by the emerging generation of designers who are trying to break free from the shackles of Scandi simplicity. But no fashion history should be written without ample attention for fashion’s surrounding image-apparatus: photography occupies a very central role in the industry, also in the North. Regional fashion publishing has historically served as the mediator and link between consumers and international fashion houses, while the pages of the magazine constitutes the most important platform for fashion photographers to show their densest creative visions. Now, a new exhibition at Øksnehallen traces the history of Danish fashion photography for the first time ever.
Featuring hundreds of original photos by Danish photographers and magazines through the ages, Exposure: Danish Fashion Photography at a Glance casts a light on a dynamic industry of fashion image-making rarely discussed. Spanning the Danish lifestyle magazine Dagmar, which in the late 1800s shared fashion tips with its readers of bourgeois women, to the incomparable work of the Danish fashion photographer Gunnar Larsen, who expanding the meaning and possibility of fashion photography in the 1970s and 80s’, the exhibition locates Denmark as one of the apex of the historical medium. In addition, it sheds light on home-grown talents such as Louise Damgaard, Morten Laursen, and Rasmus Weng Karlsen, whose work in Eurowoman and other lifestyle magazines have helped define the visuality of two decades. Not to boast, the show features a total of 45 works from the archives of DANSK, spanning our 16 years of genre-defying editorials with our community of collaborators. DANSK’s contribution is further marked by several talks during the opening weekend with founder and editor-in-chief Uffe Buchard, who will be discussing publishing and fashion photography as art with fellow industry leaders on June 23rd. Are you fan of DANSK and of fashion photograhy in general, do not miss this golden opportunity — we’ll see you there!
