The name Veruschka says Eastern Europe, like many ace things in fashion these days. But Veruschka, first supermodel to ever go solely by her first name, was in fact German (b. 1939), and travelled from Germany to New York in the early sixties, her exotic looks making her one of the most famous models of her time. In the course of her career she worked with people like Richard Avedon and Salvador Dalí, and the images of Veruschka and the leopard, and Veruschka wrapped in fur, are legendary within the canon of fashion photography. She stopped modeling at large in the mid-seventies and has since then, in addition to her work as an artist, writer and actress, appeared in selected fashion campaigns. She is currently featured in the 2018 Acne Studios Resort collection, posing in self-selected favourites. “This is a collection of Acne archetypes, iconic and real, so I wanted to work with an icon for the shoot”, says creative director Johnny Johansson. In this campaign Veruschka’s postures and her red semi-short hair mixed with the deep red colours in Acne’s design, the yellow elbow length gloves, the mussels, not to mention the big lacquered wood belt buckles and wooden print leggings, create a fun and mysterious Twin Peaks-y look. No reason not to cherish this collaboration both wonderful and strange!
