After fashion months begins art season, but unlike the arcane epicenters of the luxury fashion industry, art is always moving across the globe. Forget Frieze Art Fair in London, skip Art Basel in Miami: the new hubs of art exhibitions and fairs are found in Asia, South America, North Africa. Besides, once the Kardashians and their ancillary crew start descending onto the same cultural event as you, it’s an urgent reminder that you gotta keep moving. This season, we suggest you head to the far East, specifically to Hong Kong. Here, Art Basel has held its third fair location for almost a decade, and in the process stimulated the growth of a veritable art week in the Chinese city state. If you’re free next week, we suggest you get yourself a seat on Cathay Pacific, a ticket for the official art fair, and we’ll handle the rest: just follow this guide to the best exhibitions, events and parties of Hong Kong Art Basel.
Opera For Animals – Opening Reception. March 22nd, 7 PM @ Para Site.
An Opera for Animals looks at different acts of staging that have been crucial to our imagination of modernity. The exhibition is interested in how these complexities are still alive, even after the demise of the colonial era and of Western opera as a fully living art form. As a parallel discussion, it includes less discussed connections between European classical music and other music systems.

“AFRICA TO CHINA” BY PIETER HUGO – OPENING RECEPTION. March 26th, 2 pm @ Pekin Fine Arts.
Pieter Hugo first made his name with his brutally frank photographic portraits of his “kin”, mainly the Afrikaners, of South Africa’s post-apartheid era. In this exhibition, he will debut works fromFlat Noodle Soup Talk (2015–16), his first works shot in Beijing. Eschewing the touristy, he chose instead to record Beijingers in fleeting moments of ordinary intimacy.
EAU DE COLOGNE – OPENING RECEPTION. March 26th, 6PM @ Spruth Magers
Eau de Cologne began as a series of exhibitions and publications, organised by Monika Sprüth between 1985 and 1993, which sought to create a new dialogue around contemporary art. The exhibitions introduced young women artists, each of whom individually represented powerful attitudes and practices, and established a discourse around art, feminism, and power. This is the first presentation of the series in Asia.
